Friday June 18, 3:00 p.m. – Loon Cruise on Squam Lake - Join an LPC Biologist and a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center Captain for a 90 minute Loon Cruise on Squam Lake. The cruise, which will focus on loon biology, conservation, and monitoring, leaves from the Science Center Lake Cruise dock between the Route 3 Bridge and Walter’s Basin Restaurant in Holderness at 3:00 p.m. every Friday between June 19th and August 21st. Sunday June 27 - The Annual Summer Gala – This year’s Summer Gala will be held at Church Landing, on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, NH. Thursday July 1, 7:30 p.m. – Summer Nature Talk: LOONS – The Call of the Wild
Loon Preservation Committee Director Harry Vogel and award winning nature photographer John Rockwood team up for a presentation for loon lovers. John’s slide show follows loons from their arrival in the spring to their departure in the fall. Harry will talk about the work of LPC biologists and how loon watcher volunteers can help to preserve loons. Free Admission. Thursday July 9, 7:30 p.m. – Summer Nature Talk: Summer Birds of the Lakes Region - Life-long birdwatchers, Bob and Dana Duxbury-Fox, share facts, photos and sound bites of over 50 birds commonly found in the Lakes Region. Join them at 7:30 a.m. the following morning for a half-day bird walk on the Markus Wildlife Sanctuary at The Loon Center. Children are welcome if they can walk quietly through the woods. Thursday July 15, 7:30 p.m. - Summer Nature Talk: Fantastic Fungi I Have Loved and Known. Join seasoned mycologist Rick Van de Poll for a colorful tour of the fantastic (and infamous) fungi of the Lakes Region. Learn to separate the edible from the poisonous, the common from the rare, as well as how to prepare mushrooms for winter consumption long after they have retreated underground. Free Admission. Saturday July 17, 8:00 a.m. - Annual Loon Census – Each year, LPC hosts an annual Loon Census to monitor New Hampshire’s loons and their progress on lakes throughout the state. Come and join the many volunteers who help LPC tally the loons on NH’s lakes from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and report the results back to the Loon Preservation Committee. No experience is necessary. Saturday July 17, 10:00 a.m. - Annual Loon Festival - Good family fun! Don’t miss the nature exhibits and children’s activities featuring Mr. Phil and his famous balloon tying. There will also be face painting, live music, free food, slide shows and more! 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at The Loon Center on Lee’s Mills Road in Moultonborough, 476-5666. Admission is free. Thursday July 22, 7:30 p.m. – Summer Nature Talk: All About Comets – Far Out!
The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center comes to the Loon Center to answer all your questions about comets! Where do they come from? What are they made of? Chris Martin, wildlife biologist for NH Audubon, monitors and manages the state's endangered and threatened birds of prey, such as bald eagles. Chris will describe eagle recovery successes and failures in the Lakes Region and beyond, describe key management efforts and partnerships to help eagles, and tell you how you can get involved. Amy Smagula, Limnologist with the Dept. of Environmental Services, provides a look at the problems caused by infestations of exotic aquatic plants, such as milfoil. Photographer, Park Ranger and Naturalist Ed Sharron offers a glimpse into the life of a wild animal. Much more than just looking at footprints, tracking can often tell you how fast an animal was moving, what its mood was when it made them, and what it recently had for a meal (if you come upon scat), and more. This informative presentation features videos and animal sounds as well as track casts and skull replicas. Free Admission. Saturday November 27, 10:00 a.m. - Annual Holiday Open House - Come and join us for our Annual Holiday Open House from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Admission is Free. You don’t want to miss Mr. Phil Balloonologist, Santa and Mrs. Claus, children’s activities, nature exhibits, free food, slide shows and holiday gift shopping. Admission is Free. Saturday November 27 – Benefit Raffle Drawing – Join us at our Annual Holiday Open House where we’ll draw the winning ticket for this year’s raffle.
